Association Statistics
- Each Year 795,000 Americans have a new or recurrent stroke
Of those: 610,000 are first time strokes and 185,000 are recurrent strokes
- 7 million people 20 years and older have had a stroke
- Every 40 seconds someone in America has a stroke
- On average, every 4 minutes, someone dies from a stroke accounting for 1 out of
every 18 deaths in 2008
- Stroke ranks 4th in leading causes of death (formerly 3rd, stroke centers improving
chances for survival)
- Every year about 55,000 more women than men have a stroke and account for 60%
of all stroke deaths
- African Americans have a 2 fold risk of having a first time stroke than Caucasians
- By 2030, an additional 4 million people will have a stroke. This would be a 24.9%
increase over 2010
